Thom is the founder and CEO of Serafin & Associates, Inc. He has created a unique space in the world of public affairs in Chicago and across Illinois where his counsel, strategic planning and crisis management skills are widely sought by businesses, government agencies, non-profits and the news media.

“We don’t use the word ‘can’t’ at our firm,” says Serafin. “Our attitude is no client goal is out of reach of our fields of expertise.”

Because of his deep knowledge of the political landscape and his understanding of contemporary media, Thom appears regularly as an analyst on television and radio news; his high profile is an asset to his clients and the media alike. Thom is widely respected for his own journalism background and many years as a political consultant.

His expertise comes from years of hands-on experience, first as a network radio correspondent covering the Illinois capital, and later in the role of press secretary for several U.S. Senate campaigns and a presidential campaign. Thom has served on the staffs of U.S. Sen. Alan Dixon and U.S. Rep. Dan Rostenkowski in Chicago and Washington, D.C., and has advised some of the highest-profile policy makers in Illinois and the nation.

As a contributing author, he was featured in the book Crisis Communication- Practical PR Strategies for Reputation Management and Company Survival.

Thom earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communications with a minor in Film Making from the University of Illinois/Springfield (UIS) where, as an undergraduate, he helped launch the prestigious Public Affairs Reporting (PAR) program with then-professor Paul Simon. He has endowed a yearly PAR scholarship at the university. Continuing on at UIS, Thom went on to earn a Masters in Public Affairs Reporting. Simon, who later became an iconic Congressman and U.S. Senator from Illinois, was a longtime friend and mentor to Thom who chose him as Media Director for his humanitarian mission to Cuba in 2001.

As a testament to his strategic mindset and influence with politicians and policy, Thom was named to the Crain’s Chicago Business 2015 “20 Most Powerful Political Insiders” list.

Thom serves on the University of Illinois Alumni Board. He is also active in the West Suburban Chamber of Commerce, where he is a past board member; and has performed onstage and volunteered with the Theatre of Western Springs. A passionate fan of the Chicago White Sox, Thom spent many years coaching youth baseball and also served on the La Grange Little League Board.
